Morningside
Area Profile
Leafy and hip Morningside is one of Edinburgh’s most desirable areas. A bustling area next to Marchmont and Bruntsfield, it is almost like a town within a town, with a fantastic range of shops, bars, restaurants and lots of other local amenities.
Morningside’s literary heritage is amongst the best in the modern era, with Ian Rankin, Alexander McCall Smith and J K Rowling just some of the authors who have once called the area home.
Whilst it may not be right in the heart of the capital, Morningside is super connected through numerous bus services which serve the area day and night. That makes living in Morningside convenient wherever you need to be in the city, and the city bypass is quick to access to heading south.
Morningside’s range of shops is excellent, including Waitrose and M&S supermarkets for the weekly shop and a great range of independent retailers. For those with a sweet tooth, living in Morningside is perfect with the famous S Luca café and ice cream parlour in your neighbourhood – locals will defy you to kind a better ice cream!
Coffee lovers pay attention too. Salt Café, opposite the Church Hill Theatre, is superb but there is no shortage of other places to grab your favoured brew. The same is true if you fancy something a little stronger. With the famous Canny Man’s bar on your doorstep you’ll be able to eat, drink and relax in what Rick Stein describes as ‘the best pub in the world’.
Morningside is a great area for families with children, with a number of excellent nurseries and schools in the vicinity. And if you are a student, you’ll find the area an ideal location for accessing Napier University, and you’ll be no more than a short journey to the various University of Edinburgh sites.
