New Town
Area Profile & Property Showcase

Edinburgh’s internationally famous New Town richly deserves its World Heritage Site status. A truly unique area defined by beautiful Georgian architecture and wide streets, the New Town offers a wide mix of property types from the most exclusive executive homes to large flats and individual studios.

Created between 1767 and 1850 the New Town was a huge experimental development to house the gentry and merchants. And whilst it retains its aspirational appeal for many Edinburgh folk, today the New Town most certainly is a place for everyone, thanks to a choice of properties ranging from the luxurious and grand to the compact and affordable.

Being so close to the city centre, you’d expect the area to be bustling, but more often than not it surprises with its sleepy, laid back pace that can be an oasis of calm in the heart of Edinburgh.

The city centre areas of Princes Street and George Street sits within the New Town, with Scotland’s finest choice of high street shopping, exclusive fashions and artisan boutiques. The West End and the Old Town are a short walk away, offering many further attractions, shops, bars and eateries.

New Town life offers amazing convenience and easy access to the tram network and mainline train services from Waverley station. Walking is probably the easiest way to get around the New Town, but there is plenty of on-street permit parking for car drivers.

Getting to other areas of the city could not be easier too. Nearly all the city’s buses run via Princes Street or George Street, with many other services winding through the New Town including the 23, 27, 41 and 42.

Everyday shopping is covered by main supermarkets at nearby Comely Bank and Canonmills, with a host of express supermarkets across the area. The famous local Edinburgh institution that is Margiotta’s on Dundas Street brings a hipper flavour to the daily shop too.

New Town offers a range of excellent bars and restaurants that gives socialising a unique dimension. From the lively bars of George Street, to the characterful independents including Kay’s Bar and Six Degrees North, everyone is catered for.

And when it comes to restaurants, the New Town has it all. Clustered around the Thistle Street, Hanover Street, Dundas Street and Frederick Street areas are a variety of eateries covering every taste and budget, including the highly rated The Table and Cafe St Honore.

Various first rate sports facilities and green spaces are available throughout the New Town too, including high quality fitness suites at the Bannatyne Health Club and Spa on Queen Street the Nuffield Health Club at the Omni Centre. The nearby Inverleith Park to the north and Princes Street Gardens in the city centre offer the perfect places for savouring the great outdoors.
